Budget & Stimulus

Work is continuing on preparation of two-year budgets that will be presented at the Board's annual meeting June 16-17.

Each campus and institute and the System will show how federal stimulus money will be used over the next two years and how we are addressing the anticipated $66 million reduction in state funding two years from now.

At this point, plans call for reducing the System administration budget by $5.3 million, which is a 10.3 percent reduction from FY09. These cuts will not be replaced with stimulus money; $5 million will go to the campuses. There will probably be further reductions. Some System job reductions will be achieved by leaving vacant positions empty, and some through reorganization efforts that already were under way.

The University also is preparing to apply for stimulus funding distributed by federal agencies through a competitive grant process. We are in the process of developing proposals to compete for more than 70 grants. The process will be refined once we receive guidelines from the agencies.

Statewide initiatives being pursued by UT that are the result of federal stimulus funds:

  • Broadband connectivity for underserved populations
  • Biomass crop development
  • Energy and energy conservation
  • Math and science teacher programs
